If you’re anything like me, you’ve seen a few seasonal cycles, recognised how the body responds and connected the dots between the autumnal to winter change. ❄️
The internal bodily clock (known as the circadian rhythm) which senses changes in sunlight, temperature & air moisture, causes
physiological and hormonal shifts that affect everything from energy levels, appetite and mood. 📉
Why Winter Hits the Skin Hard 🥶
The skin is one of the first organs to feel the seasonal pressure. For some it’s mild dryness; for others it flares into eczema or psoriasis. Either way, you feel it.
Here’s what’s really going on:
* Reduced sunlight, humidity and colder
temperatures at this time of year slow down the skin’s repair cycle.
* Lower vitamin D levels impact collagen production and hydration.
* Hormonal changes ramp up inflammation, irritation and sensitivity.
Whether a small tin of lip balm, a tube of cocoa butter or a tub of shea butter it’s better to have a solution for the skin having to work harder as it adapts to the colder, darker winter months.
Enter Lavender: The purple protector 🪻🧴
Lavender’s history dates back through the era’s and was known to the ancient Egyptians, Greeks and Romans who introduced it to Britain. The name "lavender" is thought to be derived from a Latin word meaning "to wash”.
Here’s why it works:
* Deep hydration & soothing: Helps lock in moisture and calm irritation, perfect for dryness caused by cold weather and indoor heating.
* Antioxidant defence: Protects skin from environmental stress and helps repair the skin’s barrier.
* Microbial protection: Creates a cleaner, healthier environment for winter-stressed skin.

Always dilute: Never apply undiluted essential oils directly to the skin. Mix a few drops of lavender oil with a carrier oil like almond, jojoba, or coconut oil before applying to your skin.
For dryness: Add a few drops of essential oil to a warm bath to moisturise and soothe dry skin, or mix with a carrier oil and massage it into your skin after bathing to lock in moisture.
There are several tried hand tested natural remedies used to protect, moisturise and soothe skin during the colder, darker months.
