I have seen the phrase “No one is coming to save you”, appearing more often on different media platforms.
This recurring phrase caused me to question, when did men over 40, begin to expect a knight in shining armour to rescue us? What is this altruistic character saving us from? Ourselves, perhaps?
An improved mantra would ignite something visceral that already lives within us. Taking back whatever responsibility we delegated to this mystical, legendary saviour.
Where could we start in creating such an affirming phrase? One that will inspire us to visit the boundary of our creature comforts & venture into the untamed landscape of our personal growth zone?
I’d suggest starting with an intriguing little poem by William Ernest Henley, simply entitled, Invictus.
These words would have spurred on Alexander before he left his mark on the city along the north African coast.
Henley’s sonnets could have inspired MLK before he gave that rousing speech on the mall or when he told us in his final call that he’d been to the mountaintop.
Before Ali & Foreman rumbled in the jungle of Zaire, surely both men recited such powerful affirmations. They knew, no one was coming to save them.
Whatever challenge you are about to undertake, physical, academic, professional or personal, remember Henley’s pen:
It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll
I am the master of my fate,
I am the captain of my soul.”
Such lines would make you unreasonable to doubt the assurance, the conviction.
Then you will know that you don’t need to be saved and that “No one is coming to tame you.”
What poems, songs, stories or multi media content inspires you to step out of your comfort zone?

Powerful reflection, sir! Our Deepest Fear by Marianne Williamson always lights up a fire in me when I get still and take in the words.
