Tech Lacks Compassion — Here’s Why You Shouldn’t

My life changed the moment I learnt the art of self compassion. As my first post of the year, it’s my hope that you will too.

Last week marked my first weigh-in of 2026, using one of those electronic smart scales that syncs seamlessly to a digital app. You know the kind, sleek, efficient, data-driven.

I stepped on.
The device did its thing.
Then it politely asked if it was really me standing on the sensors.

😳

This clever bit of kit measures everything from BMI and visceral fat to skeletal muscle and more. Having compared my post-Christmas weight to my much lighter pre-Christmas self, it concluded that this sudden increase surely belonged to someone else.

If you’re anything like me, you embraced the festive season, time with family and friends, laughter, connection, and yes… seasonal treats. Sweet and savoury, mulled and crumbled, roasted and fried. Enjoyed mindfully, but enjoyed nonetheless.

There I was, almost discouraged. Quietly judged….by a machine!
A machine that has tracked and stored my data for over four years.

What it lacked was compassion.

It couldn’t recognise the progress of the past year, one of my best to date, if I do say so myself. It couldn’t account for the miles clocked on foot and on the bike, the gains in stamina, the litres of sweat shed, or the tens of thousands of calories burned.

It didn’t see the confidence built, the conversations sparked, the skills acquired, the medals earned. It missed the layered fabric of inspiration, improved dietary discipline, mutual support, and the power of community encouragement.

Smart tech is a phenomenal servant. But in our pursuit of numbers, algorithms, metrics, statistics, we risk overlooking the qualitative wins that only a living, breathing human being can truly appreciate.

If we rely solely on devices to tell us who we are, we may forget what we are.

Just in case you’re wondering what that is, you’re an awesome living human being…….and that is more than enough. 🏅
