In 1958, photographer Art Kane created one of the most iconic images in music history: A Great Day in Harlem.

On August 12, 1958, 57 jazz giants gathered on the steps of a Harlem brownstone with legends including Count Basie, Dizzy Gillespie, Thelonious Monk, Charles Mingus, Sonny Rollins, Lester Young, Art Blakey and Mary Lou Williams. The Guardian

Forty years later, in 1998, photographer Gordon Parks returned to that same Harlem location and captured another generation.

A Great Day in Hip Hop brought together 177 artists, producers and influencers, including Rakim, Black Thought, Questlove, Busta Rhymes, Slick Rick, Fat Joe, DJ Kool Herc and Xzibit. (Gordon Parks Foundation⁠)

• Different generation.
• Different sound.
• Same spirit.

The baton had been passed.

Fast forward 28 years and I myself am also in Harlem on 13th August 2026 at the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture on Lenox Avenue, now curated by the New York Public Library. An experience I’d dreamt of for 26 years.

That idea got me thinking about the music that has passed through my own life, across soul, jazz, funk, hip hop, reggae, rock, dancehall and beyond.

One of my favourites is Barry White, whose Love’s Theme, performed by the Love Unlimited Orchestra, was recorded and released in 1973. That instrumental has always represented something bigger to me than just music: emotion, orchestration, influence and legacy. (Wikipedia⁠)

So I took those inspirations and created my own musical presentation.

I recreated the iconic group photograph and called it:

“A Great Day in Azibu’s World.”

And the song?

❤️ “Azibu’s Love Theme.” ❤️

This is about more than recreating a photograph.

It’s about influence. Inspiration. Legacy.

About how one generation plants a seed, another waters it, and somewhere down the line somebody else grows something completely unexpected from it.

Jazz → Soul → Funk → Disco → Hip Hop → Whatever comes next.

The baton keeps moving.

So keep creating. Keep sharing. Keep planting those seeds.

Because we never know where they’ll land.

And we never know what they might grow into.
