I remember watching a video of Floyd Mayweather a few years ago and mid-interview, as calm as ever, he casually mentioned getting a B12 top-up as part of his training regime. I’ll be honest: I was surprised. I figured someone like Floyd, you know, clean, elite, insanely disciplined would get everything he needed from a perfectly balanced diet and world-class training schedule.
How wrong I was.
Since then, I’ve dug deeper into what vitamin B12 actually does and why even the best of the best make sure their levels are in check.
For starters, B12 is crucial for energy production and red blood cell formation. Translation? It helps keep you alert, sharp, and physically capable, rather than sluggish, foggy, or constantly tired 😶🌫️. Sounds pretty important right? Especially when you’ve got someone in the ring ducking and weaving, trying to land a combo of jabs, uppercuts, and powerful hooks. 🥊💨
Now, let’s bring it closer to home: middle-aged men like you and me.
Our bodies are great at masking deficiencies, until they’re not. As we hit our 40s and 50s, the signs of low B12 can creep in quietly, and suddenly we’re dealing with stuff that doesn’t quite make sense for someone who’s “doing everything right.”
Think:
• Tingling in the hands or feet
• Mood swings or low mood
• Memory lapses
• Trouble focusing
• Random fatigue
• Erectile dysfunction (yep, that too)
• Even heart palpitations or shortness of breath
And if you’re thinking, “But I eat well,” consider this: B12 is only found naturally in animal-based foods. So unless your diet includes things like beef liver & kidneys, shellfish & clams, eggs (including the yolk) and dairy regularly, you might be missing out. Especially if you’re more plant-based or leaning toward cleaner, leaner proteins.
Here’s the good news, You’ve got options in the form of supplementation I.e supporting an existing healthy & balanced diet.
• Oral tablets – are easy and widely available
• Sublingual drops – absorb into the bloodstream quickly under the tongue
• Injections – ideal if you have serious absorption issues or very low (but will usually require a doctors referral)
• Nasal sprays – great if you hate pills altogether
Personally, I’m comfortable with oral tablets and they remind me to hydrate first thing in the morning before my morning coffee. 💦 ☕️😊
So here’s my question to you:
Is supplementing your diet a smart move or just hype?
• Do you prefer to get all your nutrients naturally?
• Are supplements part of your daily routine?
• Do you think the supplement industry’s gone too far, or is it giving us real tools to perform better?
• Is the info out there easy to follow or just plain overwhelming?
