Have you ever found yourself performing the same routines? As a middle aged man who enjoys an active lifestyle, I know a thing or two about this.
The same workout, for the same length of time with the same effort level? How about no workout at all? Aside from the stroll to the fridge door, exerting medium effort to open & close it, then returning to the sofa to complete a box set watching marathon? Yes, I’ve been there and done that too.🙍🏾♂️
The truth is, as Greek philosopher Heraclitus puts it, “No Man Steps Into The Same River Twice for it's not the same river and he's not the same man.”
In todays parlance that means, life is constantly changing and so are we. Should you find yourself in a trench, performing the same monotonous routines & workouts, try switching things up a little to add some razzmatazz to the experience.
Here are a few suggestions that may help:
60 Seconds of Power - If you are not in a regular mode of active exercise, take things one moment at a time. Take 60 seconds to do a physical activity. Star jumps, stretching, press ups, sit ups or even breathing exercises. Rome wasn’t built in a day.
Change Your Route - If you are used to running, cycling or walking the same route, try a new one. You may learn something about the area or come across people you’ve never seen or met before.
Increase Your Effort Level - If you are used to pushing the same pace or effort level, switch things up. That may be going from 12 mins to 11.5 mins per mile on a 5 mile run/cycle. Another approach may be to ‘go hard’ for a few minutes then bring the pace down again for a period.
Join A New Community - As human beings, we thrive in tribes, find yours asap. According to the National Library of Medicine “health is determined by social contexts ranging from micro-level relationships with family and peers, to meso-level neighbourhood factors, to macro economic and societal structures.” https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC7585135/
May I leave you with this quote from James Clears free 3-2-1 email newsletter (sign up now, thank me later). "Your best performances will come when you are working in a way that is a full expression of you. The work becomes a natural display of your personality. This is when you not only get better results, but also love the activity — because in doing the craft, you feel alive."
