Last week, our boxing coach laid it down straight.
He said, “On 14/06/2025 you’ll step in the ring with another man. He’ll have gloves on, a crowd behind him, colleagues, neighbours, bredrens, the lot. All willing him to beat you. He’ll do everything he can to hit you clean whilst slipping, ducking, weaving. You need to give yourself every chance of winning.”
That stuck with me hard.
So when that lazy little voice crept in this morning, telling me “You can take today off, it’s calm,” I had to respond the only way I know how:
“Peace! Be still.” (Straight from the Gospel - Mark 4:39)
Training yesterday was no joke. New stances, sharper footwork, cleaner technique. The last 15 minutes were carnage: burpees, squats, press ups, sit ups… all while the legs were still shouting at me after Sunday’s marathon.
But guess what? I managed to clock 19k steps today. Loosened up the legs better than sitting or laying down all day. Sometimes rest doesn’t mean doing nothing, it means moving smart.
Recovery after a marathon (or any serious workout) isn’t just chilling on the sofa:
- Hydrate heavy — don’t get caught lacking
- Politely dodge all them questions about your finish time (protect your peace)
- Eat proper — refuel your engine
- Stretch till you can’t stretch no more
- Focus on your blessings — the fact you crossed that line is enough
At the end of the day — your opps don’t care if you’re tired, if you’re sore, or if you’re feeling sorry for yourself. They’re coming regardless.
You either prepare or you get prepared.
What’s your practice for recovering after a vigorous workout of your choice? Drop a comment, let me know!
